\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b The first thing you want to do when you sense a loss of engine power is to establish a glide. You can find the best glide airspeed in your airplane's POH.
\par
\par When you fly at best glide speed, you minimize the altitude you're going to lose. The more slowly you lose altitude, the more time you have for planning the approach. You need to hold your airspeed precisely, or else you'll increase your rate of descent. Once you have your speed established, use the trim to take pressure off the controls. \plain\f3\fs17\b

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b After you've established your glide, you'll need to look around the area for the best potential landing spot. When you make a flight away from your home airport, you should keep in mind the terrain you're flying over, and where you can find the nearest airport. That way, you have a better idea of your options if something should happen. You should concentrate, though, on places that are close by.
\par
\par If there isn't an airport within gliding distance, good choices for a landing site might be open pastures, turf farms, and hard-packed dirt fields. A road could be a good option unless it's got powerlines, trees or a lot of traffic. Bad choices for a landing site could be fields planted with crops, fields with ditches or boulders, and ones that are lined with tall trees.
\par
\par You'll want to figure out where the wind is coming from because this can make a big difference in your choice of field. A shorter field may be okay if you can take advantage of a strong headwind. On the other hand, a downwind landing in light winds, or landing with a crosswind, might work if the field you've chosen is long and relatively smooth.\plain\f3\fs17\b

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b Once you've picked out a field, you need to turn toward it. If your field isn't right below you, you'll want to get over it as quickly as possible, and then circle if you need to lose altitude.
\par
\par This gives you more time to look the field over for powerlines, fences, and potholes. Also, you'll have time to plan your descent, so you can get to a familiar position on a downwind.
\par
\par You should avoid picking out a field that's so far away that it will take all of your altitude to reach it. This kind of approach is harder to plan, and you may not make it to the field you've selected. Also, don't try to lose altitude by circling first, and then head to the field, because you may end up without enough altitude to reach it.\plain\f3\fs17\b

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b Once you have your glide established and the field picked out, you can try to figure out what's gone wrong with the airplane. There are a few things you should do right away that can be done from memory. But, if you have time, run through the restart checklist, which you'll find in the POH.
\par
\par Though the procedures are a little different for every airplane, the basics stay pretty much the same: apply carb heat, and make sure the fuel selector is in the correct position. If you're in an airplane that has separate positions for each tank, you'll want to switch to another tank. Then, adjust the mixture, check that the ignition switch is on BOTH, and make sure the primer is in and locked.\plain\f3\fs17\b
