But, you should treat every practice approach like you might have to make the landing. So aim for a field that you could really land on. Establish and maintain the recommended best glide attitude, configuration, and airspeed, 10 knots. Select a suitable emergency landing area within gliding distance. Plan and follow a flight pattern to the selected landing area considering altitude, wind, terrain, and obstructions. Attempt to determine the reason for the malfunction and make the correction, if possible. Maintain positive control of the airplane at all times. You can find the best glide airspeed in your airplane's POH. \par \par When you fly at best glide speed, you minimize the altitude you're going to lose. The more slowly you lose altitude, the more time you have for planning the approach. You need to hold your airspeed precisely, or else you'll increase your rate of descent. When you make a flight away from your home airport, you should keep in mind the terrain you're flying over, and where you can find the nearest airport. That way, you have a better idea of your options if something should happen.
